How is Essential Oil Obtained?

Essential Oils are obtained through one of several different processes:

	steam distillation
	solvent extraction
	expression
	maceration
	enfleurage

The most common processes used to obtain essential oils are:

	expression for citrus oils
	steam distillation for all others

For effective therapeutic use it is crucial that only pure essential oils be used. It is meaningless to buy any other product, no matter how appealing its packaging or aroma may be, because reconstituted products or chemical copies of natural essences simply do not work for what essential oils were intended. Suppliers will at times dilute the pure essential oil (for economics) with carrier base and pass them off as pure. Pure essential oils can usually be found using several guides:

	smell
	price
	the reputation of your supplier
